The contemporary role of crafts in expressing ideas forces both a rethink of the intermediate role of crafts and the strengthening of its relationship to both art and design. Self-styled design artist Geoff Mann believes that the role of craft has "mutated through its own fluidity". According to him, the cross-pollination of art, craft and design has stimulated a new hybrid practice and has created practitioners who are astute generalists. If this is so, then the use of craft in aggregating value to create a new-found flexibility demands to be recognised as an important development for the creative industries.
